Ways to keep your soil fertile – Aquascapes

Landscaping in kenya

Without fertile soil, we would have no plants. Without plants, we would have no food. And without food, there is no us, since we need food to survive. Soil is nutrient-rich largely due to the activities of living things in the soil. Although some of these organisms are microscopic, they play a major role in soil fertility.

  • Use qualified fertilizers. Your crops’ and your soil’s health depends a great deal on the fertilizers that you use. For this reason, it becomes important for you to make the right choice of fertilizers for use on your farm.
  • Never heard of a cover crop? A cover crop is any plant that you grow specifically to improve your soil. Cover crops, when used properly, offer a wealth of benefits of gardeners. It will increase the organic matter in your soil, prevent soil erosion and weeds.
  •  Composting is a means of recycling almost any organic wastes. It reduces the bulk of organic materials and speeds up the formation of soil humus.
  • Dry out your eggshells and crush them up when you get a few dozen. You can mix them directly into the soil or add to your compost. There is a very small amount of nitrogen and phosphorus here, but mostly you are getting calcium.
  • You can add a small amount of ash directly to the soil to supply added calcium and potassium. It also slightly boosts the alkalinity of the soil.
  • Cover the garden bed with clear plastic sheeting. The sun will warm the soil, encouraging any weed seeds to germinate and then die under the plastic.
